Depression
Depression is a common mental health condition that can affect mood, energy, motivation, sleep, relationships, work, and day-to-day functioning. Depression can vary in severity and presentation. A physician can assess symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment options.
What is Depression?
Depression is more than feeling sad or having a difficult week. It is a medical condition that can affect how a person thinks, feels, behaves, sleeps, eats, and functions day to day.
Why Changes Occur
Depression can develop gradually or suddenly due to brain chemistry, genetics, stress, trauma, hormonal changes, chronic pain, sleep problems, medical conditions, or major life transitions. It is not a personal weakness.
How Treatment Helps
Treatment can help identify the underlying factors contributing to symptoms and creates a plan to help support mood, energy, sleep, brain health, and overall wellbeing. At Yago Health, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to mental health and whole-person care.
- Persistent sadness or low mood
- Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
- Fatigue or low energy
- Sleep changes, including insomnia or sleeping too much
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Difficulty concentrating
- Brain fog or indecisiveness
- Feelings of guilt, hopelessness, or worthlessness
- Irritability or emotional numbness
- Reduced motivation
- Withdrawal from friends, family, or work
- Thoughts of death or self-harm
Depression symptoms can involve mood, cognition, behaviour, sleep, appetite, energy, and day-to-day functioning. Some people experience emotional symptoms, while others notice physical changes, low energy, or difficulty functioning.
If you are having thoughts of self-harm, suicide, or feel unable to stay safe, seek emergency help right away by calling 911 or going to the nearest emergency department.
Common symptoms can include:
- Family history of depression
- Chronic stress
- Trauma or major life changes
- Hormonal changes
- Sleep problems
- Chronic pain or illness
- Medication side effects
- Substance use
- Social isolation
- Burnout
- Anxiety or other mental health conditions
- Changes in brain chemistry or nervous system function
Depression is not always caused by one clear event. Sometimes symptoms build over time. A medical assessment can help identify possible contributing factors and inform discussion of treatment options based on your symptoms and medical history.
Common causes can include:
Feeling low, exhausted, or disconnected?

Treatment Options for Depression in Bedford
Several treatment options may be considered for depression, depending on symptoms, medical history, and individual circumstances. Your doctor can assess your symptoms, health history, mental health needs, lifestyle, and other relevant circumstances to discuss which treatment options may be appropriate. At Yago Health in Bedford, TMS is offered as a non-invasive treatment option for treatment-resistant depression.
Private TMS Treatment for Depression
Transcranial magnetic stimulation, also known as TMS, is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. TMS may be considered when depression has not adequately responded to other treatment approaches, based on a physician’s assessment.
During treatment, an electromagnetic coil is placed against the scalp while you remain awake and alert. The coil delivers repeated magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.
TMS does not require surgery, anesthesia, or implanted electrodes. Patients remain awake during treatment, and post-treatment instructions can be discussed with the clinical team.

FAQs
Is TMS safe?
TMS devices have Health Canada authorization for specific indications. The physician can discuss the relevant device, indication, potential risks, and suitability for treatment. Headache and scalp discomfort are among the side effects that may occur during TMS treatment. The clinical team can discuss potential side effects before treatment. Potential risks and side effects vary by individual circumstances and the specific TMS system used. These can be discussed with the treating physician. Clinical staff monitor patients during TMS sessions according to the treatment protocol.
How long does TMS treatment take?
BrainsWay’s TMS treatment is normally spread out over four-to-six weeks. During this time, patients come in for sessions five times per week and each of these sessions last about 20 minutes. Depending on the condition and treatment plan, additional sessions may be discussed after the initial course of treatment.
Does TMS require anesthesia or surgery?
No. TMS does not require surgery, anesthesia, or implanted electrodes. Patients remain awake during treatment. Post-treatment instructions can be discussed with the clinical team.
What treatments are available at Yago Health for depression?
Yago Health offers TMS treatment for depression, mental health assessment and treatment planning, and medication management, depending on symptoms, medical history, and clinical circumstances.
